What are the common causes of ridesharing accidents?

Ridesharing companies like Uber and Lyft are available in many U.S. cities. They are popular because of the ease in using them. All you have to do is download their particular app, which saves your credit card information allowing you to request a driver whenever you need one.

As convenient as the ridesharing apps are to use, there are some downsides to them. The most important one, in our opinion, is that the drivers of ridesharing companies like Uber and Lyft do not require any special training or qualifications. As such, car accidents might be more likely to occur.

What are the common causes of ridesharing accidents?

The most common causes of ridesharing accidents is similar to what causes car crashes by other types of negligent or careless drivers. Some of the causes of ridesharing accidents include the following:

  • Inexperienced or unqualified driving

  • Speeding Road rage

  • Unsafe speeds during inclement weather, road conditions and traffic situations

  • Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs

  • Failure to yield the right of way

  • Failure to obey traffic signals and signs

  • Fatigued or drowsy driving

  • Failure to properly maintain the vehicle

  • Constant and unsafe lane changing

  • Tailgating

  • Distracted driving

This last cause, distracted driving, is one of the most common causes of ridesharing accidents. Ridesharing service drivers frequently check their phone for texts relating to other ride requests or are looking at or setting up their GPS. Answering a text takes away a driver’s attention for about five seconds. If he or she is traveling at 55 mph, that's enough time to travel the length of a football field. Obviously, this greatly increases the risk of a car wreck.
